How Does This Homeschooling Thing Actually Work? Fitting it all Together

Homeschooling Hearts & Minds

So here we are at the last week of The Virtual Curriculum Fair hosted by Susan @ Homeschooling Hearts and Minds. This week we are invited to share how we fit everything all together.

I think, according to my readings, very few of us homeschoolers actually fit it all together. We certainly do our best though.

So, what do we do?

For us, at our house, we try to keep focussed on the goal, and I mean the end goal. We want to raise children who love the Lord and who love learning. We want to equip them to be life-long learners and thinkers.

So to this end we:
  • Try to do some degree of classical study, grammar, and english studies
  • Try to make sure they get educated properly in Math
  • Enlarge their world and critical thinking through the studies of the humanities
  • We make sure they get spiritually fed and theologically educated.
  • We try to have good examples before them

I want to make it clear that I use the word TRY because this is not always consistent or to the degree we want, but we strive, and most of all rely on the certainty and belief that the Lord already knows what their future holds. We are instruments in The Master's hands and he is the one that empowers us and performs his plans despite and through our failures.

This year has been rather interesting and different than my previous 2 years of homeschooling, partly due to my being part of the TOS crew, and it has been a bit unsettling for me. But, praise God, before the year started the Lord had opened my eyes to these truths and they are carrying me through. My kids's are in God's hand, their path is already set before them, and I need to submit to Him first of all, and then strive to do what he has called me to do, i.e teach them and be examples to them.

As for schedule, I am working on that one. Every year I set one up but it does not last 3/4 of the year. I am still on the learning curve on that one.

Lastly I want to say that we are fist of all a family and try, as much as we can, to enjoy each other, play together and have fun together.

Someone reminded me today that when we strive too much for perfection, we are, in a sense, denying our humanity. As home educators, we are faced with our humanity in every moment of every day, but I think this can strengthen our our faith in God and our bonds with our family. All we can do is the best we can through God's graces.

Thank you for joining the Virtual Curriculum Fair, I've enjoyed reading your posts. ;0)

Reformation Day Giveaway

We are approaching October 31, which is an important date for all protestants. This date commemorates Martin Luther’s nailing of his ninety-five theses to a church door on October 31, 1517 in Wittenburg, Germany, which in turn provoked a debate that resulted in what we now call the Protestant Reformation. As the “Father of the Reformation”, Martin Luther is a vital figure in Church History. His sacrifice and willingness to wage battle against the spiritual, religious, and political powers of his medieval world allowed Christians throughout time to embrace the following truths: salvation by grace alone , through faith alone,  and in Christ alone, along with the supremacy of Scripture, referred to as  Scripture alone, and all of it for God's Glory Alone. These being commonly called the Five Solas of the Reformation.  Danika Cooley, author and creator of the Bible curriculum Bible Road Trip ,  has recently written a book for young people recounting Luther's story:   When

I have to admit I am in love with our first review product from the 2015 crew year. We received a full year subscription to Visual Learning Systems 's Digital Online Science Program Elementary edition and S econdary edition . Science has always been one those subjects I am having all sort of trouble deciding what to use and never being fully satisfied with what we are doing. Well my search is over.
