Weekly wrap-up

Wow, the year is going full speed, isn't it? This week was a reasonably good week. We have been back using our paper schedule and it has helped keeping us on track. Mommy has also been trying to stay on track and disciplined. Which means not letting distraction keeping me from what I am suposed to do. THis kind of thing gives reason to the kids not to be dilligent.

This week I have been implementing a few things that I have learned from my time of searching and reflextion of the past 2 weeks. One of them I just mentioned, another one is giving full attention to the boys when doing school. I had this bad habit of doing something else while I was waiting for them to complete an assignment. For some kids you can do that, for some it does the opposite effect: dawdling. I happened on a post on Cutting Down on Frustration, and it really hit home. Now I try to patiently wait for him to do the assignment, if need be, I engage him. It actually has been interesting to see how it has allow him to talk out how he processes thing, it has ben very amusing to me, as well as amazing.

Another thing I have introduced is this:

I use a cardbox to keep distraction away from him. Somehow it has also helped tremendously to keep him focused.

So, what did we do this week?

First Language Lesson. This will probably take us all the way to the end of June to finish.

Geography, still going well.

Science, we moved on to learning about food chains.

Math, we have reached the last part of the book, revision, and are taking our time to complete it. This week I did a little addition jumping games with the boys, and they like it.

Spelling somehow did not get done this week, because the 2 days assigned for it got messed up. Monday we went out skating and Friday we had a playdate.

Reading got done and the narration for it was this beautiful story clipart. After drawing it, he retold me the story and later on to daddy.

On Thursday, Zach wanted to learn about magnets, so we had a magnetic afternoon with magnet exploration and video watching on the computer.

Joho, this week did lots of e-learning, some Math workbook, addition and substraction, and phonics workbook. He did some SuperMind puzles too and in general was not too much of a distraction. I need to find a way of giving him more attention though. Any ideas are welcome, once again.

I have also reduced our circle time to songs and reading. We have been listening to the Go Fish songs on you tube, and as a result decided to memorize the books of the Bible. For the reading part, I alternate a classic story, a bible story from 100 Bible Heros and the Child's Story Bible. All of this is in addition to our breakfast devotion with daddy (The One Year Bible for children, catechism and bible verse) and our evening reading time. I love circle time in that it allows for the boys to really share their thoughts about what we are reading, character values and the likes. It is a very valuable time of instruction in character. Often time, correcting right after the offense is not the ideal time, but when the child is receptive and attentive.

We have also continued with our audio book listening and it has been a huge hit.  You can read about it here. The latest one they've listened too is Hukleberry Fin and  now, Zach wants to listen to it again and get the Tom Sauyer one. Of to the library we are.

That's about it for our week. How was yours? For more Weekly Wrap up make sure to visit Kris at Weird Unsocialized Homeschooler.

Have a great day,

How great that you could find positive and productive ways to help him concentrate. That will serve him well in his later years :)

I love his drawings! I'd be lucky to get one out of my kiddo! :) I'm with you on the giving them attention while they are working. I don't want to hover over him, but I also don't want to completely walk away. Need to find that balance!

Reformation Day Giveaway

We are approaching October 31, which is an important date for all protestants. This date commemorates Martin Luther’s nailing of his ninety-five theses to a church door on October 31, 1517 in Wittenburg, Germany, which in turn provoked a debate that resulted in what we now call the Protestant Reformation. As the “Father of the Reformation”, Martin Luther is a vital figure in Church History. His sacrifice and willingness to wage battle against the spiritual, religious, and political powers of his medieval world allowed Christians throughout time to embrace the following truths: salvation by grace alone , through faith alone,  and in Christ alone, along with the supremacy of Scripture, referred to as  Scripture alone, and all of it for God's Glory Alone. These being commonly called the Five Solas of the Reformation.  Danika Cooley, author and creator of the Bible curriculum Bible Road Trip ,  has recently written a book for young people recounting Luther's sto...
