Homeschool 101- Home Management {5 Days of ...}

Today on day 3 of the Homeschool 101 hosted by The Schoolhouse Review Crew, we are tackling Home Management. Again, this is a topic that has a lot to do with your personality. Some of us are type A moms and some of us not so much. That said, a house has to be maintained. Noone likes to live in a place that is messy and dirty. When it comes to managing the homeschool home I have six pieces of advice: Be realistic (unless you can't help it): As homeschoolers, your home is where your kids learn. If you want your kids to be free to learn and explore you cannot be an overchiever when it comes to tidiness. There will be messes, there will be days when the house will be in the shape that you cannot stand. JUST EXPECT IT! A Place for everything. If you want to keep a house tidy, this is my #1 advice: Make sure everything has a home place and stick to it! It is easier to put things away if they have a home. It is easier to teach your kids to clean after themselves if they know ...

5 Days of Tips for Homeschool Parents - Housekeeping Tips

In homeschooling homes, one of the hardest thing to do, beside the actual schooling, is to keep a tidy and clean house. I read somewhere a few years back about how a messy house is reflective of happy kids, and though I agree that this is indeed the case, one still has to keep house. So today, I would like to share some tips on how to keep the house somewhat tidy, even as we give our kids plenty of room for exploration. Designate a place for everything. This a life saver. If something in the house does not have an assigned place, the tendency will be for it to be left laying around. In the reverse, when things have their assigned spot, it is easier to put it away and require of others to do so as well. Involve the kids in cleaning up. In homeschooling homes, a lot of the mess comes from the school work and from the kids having fun exploring. So, it is only right that they be involved in the cleaning up process. On top of that, it is a great way to teach them important skills. I...

Grade 7 Middle School Plans

The middle school years are on us. My oldest is going to be grade seven next year. As I think about our curriculum line up for next year, I cannot but think I need to look ahead to the High School years which will be upon us sooner that we think. My son does not quite know yet what he wants to do, but he has a deep love for History and logic, (and for everything Marvel and DC connected), so I am thinking he is probably gonna end up in the humanities. With that in mind I am cogitating a course of study that will hopefully prepare him to that end, while still working on some general subjects that are kind of basics. Math: We have been using and enjoying a review product from last year: CTC Math . Though the subscription ended a few months ago, I was blessed to be chosen for this year's review of it again. You can read my review from last year here. Earlier this year, I got a good deal on the Life of Fed Before High School series , and we are enjoying going through that....

Real Life Homechool and Housekeeping

This is it, the last day of the Real Life Homeschool blog hop week. I hope you have had a chance to read the different blogs posts on the topic, and gleaned some insights into some real life homeschools. Today let me tell you about how real life homeschooling works out for us when it comes to keeping the house clean and in order. I just have 4 words: It does not always. We live in an apartment and space is limited. School is done on the floor, on the sofa, on the bed, at the dinning table, and at the computer desk. What this does is that there is school work all over the house. At the end of the day I try to have both boys pick up everything and put it where it belongs, but it does not always happen. On a typical day, if you pop in my house in the middle of the day, the dinner table is a mess, the living room is a mess and the bedrooms are always a mess. I have a few mottos I try to apply to help me keep the house in some decent order and cleanliness: Motto #1:  "ever...

Planning Series - Week 8 - Homeschool and Housework . . . Can I do Both?

We are at week 8 of my summer  planning series. Today we have Misty from Joy in the Journey sharing with us about how she manages Homeschooling and Housekeeping. I will be the first one to admit that homeschooling is a full time job. With planning for school, teaching our children, and grading large piles of schoolwork homeschooling can easily take up a full workday. After the homeschool day is done, we still have our “other” job to do-being a homemaker and mom. For many homeschool families the housework takes a back burner. At the end of the day we are exhausted, which means dishes pile up, laundry stays in baskets, and our floors may be littered with crumbs. We often ask ourselves “How can I keep up?”  I have found three things help me the most with keeping up with homeschooling and housework. The first is a cleaning schedule I am a planner, and I have a husband who prefers a neat and tidy house. When we first began homeschooling, our home was a disaster many...

Work for me Wednesday

Wonders of wonders, today I have a Works-For-Me Wednesday to share: lunches at our house Here is a very short list of what we do for lunch here (mainly just the kids):   Leftover dinner Leftover breakfast . My husband absolutely loves his breakfast. So I literally usually cook breakfast. I had previously post on our breakfast   idea list . Among those you can find some that can be eaten as leftover for lunch: pancakes, waffles, omelette, frittatas and muffins. Easy quick quessadillas : On a tortilla, spread some leftover meat (chicken and beef are my favorites) with some grated cheese on top and green pepper with desired. Fold over and cook on a stovetop gill or pan. Et voila. Ham and cheese sandwiches (classic). Quick pizza: On a tortilla, spread some barbecue sauce, mixed or not with ketchup, spread ham or whatever meat you have on hand, vegetable or choice if desired and grated cheese. Bake and voila.
