CursiveLogic - TOS Review

Teaching penmanship to my kids has never been easy. My boys do not like holding a pencil or pen. Until now, at age 10 and 12, their handwriting is not the prettiest. That said, my oldest has the most struggles with it. Around grade 3 I started him on cursive, and that seemed to help a bit, but now in grade six, he still needs a lot of improvement with his penmanship skills. Here comes a new program called CursiveLogic . I was more than happy to try a cursive program with my son to help improve his skills. Members of the crew got to review this brand new handwriting curriculum: CursiveLogic Workbook. CursiveLogic brands itself as "An intelligent new way to teach cursive", and this is exactly what it is. Cursive logic was created by a teacher seeking to teach one special student to write his name.  You can read about her and her story on their Our Story page. What is Cursive Logic exactly? CursiveLogic is a spiral-bound workbook that teaches kids to write cursive ...

Studies of Ancient Civilizations Extra Resources

I love TOG because of its breadth and width of information and literature. Within the curriculum you will find plenty of resources to read along with each unit. I did do some extra reading for myself and also with Zach just to complement and add more variety in style and ways of presenting the subject matter; Zach has developed a real interest for History. Here is a list of resources that I found useful while studying the Ancient Civilizations in our Tapestry of Grace curriculum year 1: Atlas and books : The Kingfisher Atlas of the Ancient World The Visual Dictionary of Ancient Civilizations The Atlas of Ancient Civilizations The Atlas of the Ancient World The Kingfisher Book of Ancient World from the Ice Age to the Fall of Rome The Kingfisher History Encyclopedia The Big Book of Civilizations Questions and Answers: Ancient Civilizations Time Life Student Library: Ancient Civilizations Exploring History: Ancient Civilizations Ancient Civilizations : Discovering the People and Places of...

Food cures

I recently strumbled on this great book called Food Cures: Breakthrough nutritional prescriptions for everything from Colds to cance r. It is put out by Reader's digest and is a great resource for healthy eating. I personnaly have been trying to eat more healthy but that is still a weak point at our house. This book is really giving me a guideline as to the foods that definitely need to be in our regular diet given their health benefits. It explains quite in details the power of things like antioxidants, fruits and vegetables, fiber omega-3, whole grain, carbs, fats . . . What I really like about the book is that it alleviates a lot of the food myths that we have heard like weather eggs, coffee and wine are good for you or not, weather raw fruits and vegetables are better than cooked ones, and things like that . . . , and that they included a list of their 20 most powerful foods which includes avocados, beans, broccolis, carrots, garlic, flaxseeds, nuts, oat, yogurt ...

Book review

While on our trip I finished a book called: Say Goodbye to Whining, Complaining, and Bad Attitudes...in You and Your Kids by Scott Turanski and Joanne Miller. I tremendrously enjoyed it. It is packed with godly advices, suggestions and principles for eragating bad attitudes in your children and oneself. It is basically on the power of honor. We often hear and read about obedience and forget that the verse in Ephesians 6 talks about both obedience and honor. In their book, the authors really expand and explain what honor is about and how to implement it in our daily dealings with our kids. They show how practicing the concept of honor in our daily dealings improves our relationships, enhaces good attitudes and touches to the heart of raising kids. This book is easy to read, fun, clear, balanced  and most of all biblically sound. I highly recommend it to every parent.

Leading Little ones to God

I heard about this devotional for kids (3-8) on another website and thought this ccould be something I could use with my boys. So I went ahead and bought it. I must say I really like it. It's called Leading Little Ones to God: A Child's Book of Bible Teachings by Mariam M. Schoolland. It is quite theologically sound and yet very easy to read and understand. It is profound enough and yet short enough to keep the attention of a little one. Each chapter has a song and a prayer to go along with the theme and has also a Scripture passage and a memory verse accompanying the theme discussed. it is great to introduce and teach doctrine to little ones. We'll probably go through it more than once. I am even planning to make a poster with the themes we covered, a section at a time, to help my sons remember them.
