Not Back to School Blog Hop - Week 1

Not Back to School Blog Hop

The not back to school blog hop is back this year, and I thought it would be nice to participate again this year.

The first week is about curriculum, so even though I do have our curriculum for this year on a static page on the blog, I will reiterate it here  in a post for the blog hop.

We are starting our 3rd year of homeschooling, and Zach is officially in 2nd grade (with mixed grades work) and Johann in SK (doing some grade 1 stuff).

The biggest event for us this year is starting Tapestry of Grace Year 1. I am really exited about it and have great hopes of it. I have already found the differentyaoo group and forums very helpful.

Math: Singapore Mathematicshave worked for us last year, so we are keeping it. I did also start Professor B at the end of the year. They did not seem to take to that one so well, but I think it is a good addition, as Singapore does not emphasize facts so much. I will try to find a way to incorporate both. I will start Joho on Singapore Math 1.

Language Arts:

  • After finishing First Language Lessons last year I decided to move on to a grammar program, as Zach seems to be ready for it. I chose BJU Grammar 2, as the combination of grammar and writting appealed to me.

  • We will also be doing some spelling using Natural speller.

  • A major part of our Language Art will be lots of reading between the literature component of TOG and the list of classic books I came up with for Zach.

  • For handwriting I will make up bible based copywork sheets for them using WorksheetWorks, a site where you can make your own copywork or tracing worksheets.

  • For Joho I will be continuing with the grade 1 reader from CLE, I wonder, and do some Alpha and Omega Reading and phonicswhich I had gotten for Zach, back when he was in SK, but never finished with him. I will aslo start him on First language Lessons.

Latin: I have been meaning to start Latin last year but it just did not fit in, so I am going to give it another try again this year with Prima Latina.

Science: We will be starting Real Science 4 kidsas I was impressed with the samples I saw, and it looked like it would be appealing to Zach;  he really likes science. I went with the pre-level (gr.1-3) and plan to do all of the topics, chemistry, Physics and biology.

Geography: On top of the geography covered in TOG, we will be doing Daily Geography Practice 2 , as Zach really enjoyed Daily Geography Practice 1 last year. I also got a World Geography book, which we will do as time and interest allows.

Art: Zach will continue his violin lessons, and Joho is going to start Piano. I had thought of doing The Story of the Orchestra with them but figured it might be too much considering all of the things we have on the plate already, so I will consider it for next year. We will just make it a point to do the art component of TOG.

Bible and character training:

  • This year I have decided to actually use a character training curriculum to keep us consistent (that is on top of the everyday life learning moments). There are lots out there, but I settled on Learning  to Think, precisely because of what the title says: I want them to learn how to think. It will focus on different character attributes like Wisdom, attentiveness,  and use Moses as the backbone character example.

  • We will also use Responsibilities for Boys, which we will use as a devotion in the evening.

  • We are going to have our regular bible reading from the VOS Story Bible, our catechism using My First Book of Questions and Answers ,and  bible memory verses from Simply Charlotte Mason, all at breakfast time, which we started to do last year.

Here is for our curriculum line up. For more curriculum choices make sure to hop over at Heart of the Matter Online and checkout the host of homeschooling homes' choice of curriculum.

Reformation Day Giveaway

We are approaching October 31, which is an important date for all protestants. This date commemorates Martin Luther’s nailing of his ninety-five theses to a church door on October 31, 1517 in Wittenburg, Germany, which in turn provoked a debate that resulted in what we now call the Protestant Reformation. As the “Father of the Reformation”, Martin Luther is a vital figure in Church History. His sacrifice and willingness to wage battle against the spiritual, religious, and political powers of his medieval world allowed Christians throughout time to embrace the following truths: salvation by grace alone , through faith alone,  and in Christ alone, along with the supremacy of Scripture, referred to as  Scripture alone, and all of it for God's Glory Alone. These being commonly called the Five Solas of the Reformation.  Danika Cooley, author and creator of the Bible curriculum Bible Road Trip ,  has recently written a book for young people recounting Luther's story:   When
