Keyboard Town PAL - TOS Review

Photobucket

What is Keyboard PAL?

Keyboard Town PAL  is a typing program which is meant to teach your child to type with less than an hour of practice a day.

How much does it cost?

$35 for a CD-ROM

$30 for a web-based version.

The program is available in English, Spanish, and French and works on both Mac and Windows.

They also offer additional products at reasonable costs.

Who is it for?

It is geared toward  7-10 years old but is is said to be workable with younger ones as well.

Our opinion:

Depending on your child, one might find the program very attractive or quite childish. The way it works is that there is a little puppet like character (which is the “PAL sunny”) that guides and teaches the child the proper placement of the fingers on the keyboard for good and efficient typing.

It turns the keyboard into a city with each line of letters of the keyboard being a location in the city.  It teachers the proper finger positionning using story lines. The concept is well thought out and in my opinion ingenious. The method of teaching is repetition to mastery. This works for some kids and does not with others. Each time it teaches a finger placement it has the child press that letter over and over again before moving on to the next letter.

Unfortunately I cannot testify of the efficiency of the program as my boys did not enjoy the program from the get go. The repetition did not work for them, they wanted to move on quicker. On top of that, they were not too fond of the pal character. I can see how this can work for a younger child, but as the child gets older it would really depend on the particular child.

You can read some more inforamtion on the method and philosophy of the program on their website here.

Writing & Rhetoric - A Writing Curriculum Review and a Giveaway

Curriculum choosing and buying can be a very daunting task. So many subjects to cover, so many curriculum to browse though, and so many companies to consider. Today I would like to share with you a product and a company that I have come to hold in high regards. When it comes to teaching writing to the boys I was not sure which way to go, as I would not exactly consider myself a great writer. Then came along Writing and Rhetoric from Classical Academic Press. I heard about it when the second book in a series of twelve just released, and I was immediately intrigued. You see I homeschool classically, and writing is an integral part of it. Classical Academic Press puts out products geared towards classical homeschooling, so there you had  the first common ground. I was searching for something that would teach them what writing was, and guide them through the process incrementally, without bombarding them with pages and pages of writing right from the start. I found what...

Our Current Homeschool Routine - Virtual Homeschool Fair - Week 2

For week 2 of the Virtual Homeschool Fair, which is hosted by Homeschooling Hearts and Minds , we are talking method of homeschooling. When it comes to the how of homeschooling, and the method that we all follow, with the 20 plus blogger participating I can guarantee you, no method will be the same. Homeschooling is a lifestyle and a path unto a goal or toward a direction that each family sets for itself. For us, this encompasses academic rigor, as well as Christian values and depth of understanding of how to live in this world as Christians. To that end, earlier on we had settled on a classical education. 10 years into it, I cannot say we have been very good classical homeshooler. We did not follow the method and philosophy to a T but instead adapted it to our family's routine and rhythm. We became more relaxed classical homeschooler. I had good intentions with the Latin and Greek, but not enough discipline and it did not appeal to the boys; my oldest son did two years, the...

2019-2020 Curriculum Line Up- Grade 11 and Grade 9

Happy New Year to all! After a two year hiatus, I am resurrecting this blog. Life has been such that keeping up with this blog had become a really low priority, but I kind of miss it, so here I am giving it a try again. First I realized I never posted about my kids' curriculum line up for this school year. So, though late, here it is. This year I am homeschooling two high-schoolers. Time has gone so fast. With a 14 year old (9th grade) and a 16 year old (11th grade) I really feel like time is sleeping away; but that is the reality of life. We are but a vapor...
