TOS Review - Maestro Classics - Swam Lake

Photobucket

When we think of homeschooling usually we think Grammar, Reading, Math, Science, History and such. Often time, subjects like Arts and Music get pushed to the side.

Well, really it does not have to and in fact shouldn't be. There is lots of value to teaching art and music. It develops the brain in many different ways but especially in the area of creativity and enrichment.

That said I was quite excited to have been chosen to review a product from Maestro Classics. We all love music at our house. My 8 year old has been learning violin for the past 2 years, and my 6 year old just started piano this week. So I much anticipated this CD.

What is Maestro Classics you may ask?

Maestro Classics is a company that produces stories in music on CDs, for children ages 5-12.  The CDs are entertaining and educational. They have won over 45 national awards.
The CDs alternate music with talking, explanations with musical adventures. It includes information about the life and times of the work and/or the composer.

The best part of it is that the music is played by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and is led by Stephen Simon.
The CDs comes with a 24-page booklet that accompanies the CD's content.
Price:  CDs: $16.65, MP3: $9.98

Our opinion:

For review we received the story of Swan Lake, Tchaikosvky greatest ballet score, which tells the story of a prince who falls in love with a beautiful princess.

PhotobucketI thought the CD was great. I loved the music, after all it is classical, it is Tchaikovsky and it was beautiful! Unfortunately the boys did not care for it. They were ok with it but it did not grab them. I think that had to do with the fact that boys do not care much for princess and ballet. I think the story of Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel or The Tortoise and the Hare would have grabbed them more.

The booklet was very attractive to me but again it did not appeal to the boys.

What I love about this series is that it is real classical music and even though my boys did not care for it, I will be playing it as background music for them to listen to.

They have a wide variety of themes so make sure to check their website: You can listen to samples there as well to give you an idea. I would really love to get the one on My name is Handel. that promises to be a great one.

Our Current Homeschool Routine - Virtual Homeschool Fair - Week 2

For week 2 of the Virtual Homeschool Fair, which is hosted by Homeschooling Hearts and Minds , we are talking method of homeschooling. When it comes to the how of homeschooling, and the method that we all follow, with the 20 plus blogger participating I can guarantee you, no method will be the same. Homeschooling is a lifestyle and a path unto a goal or toward a direction that each family sets for itself. For us, this encompasses academic rigor, as well as Christian values and depth of understanding of how to live in this world as Christians. To that end, earlier on we had settled on a classical education. 10 years into it, I cannot say we have been very good classical homeshooler. We did not follow the method and philosophy to a T but instead adapted it to our family's routine and rhythm. We became more relaxed classical homeschooler. I had good intentions with the Latin and Greek, but not enough discipline and it did not appeal to the boys; my oldest son did two years, the...
