Sunday Hymn

The Precious Blood  Peter Gagnon Before the cross I kneel and see The measure of my sin How You became a curse for me Though You were innocent The magnitude of Your great love Was shown in full degree When righteous blood, the crimson spill Rained down from Calvary Chorus Oh, the precious blood That flowed from Mercy’s side Washed away my sin When Christ my Savior died Oh, the precious blood Of Christ the crucified It speaks for me before Your throne Where I stand justified And who am I that I should know This treasure of such worth My Savior’s pure atoning blood Shed for the wrath I’d earned For sin has stained my every deed My every word and thought What wondrous love that makes me one Your priceless blood has bought Bridge A crown of thorns, pierced hands and feet A body bruised, and Mercy’s plea To listen to this song click here Have a blessed Sunday,

Weekly wrap-up

Another Friday is upon us. For some reason it seems that January is going slower that previous months. It could be because I have been trying to make our homeschool run more smoothly than it has been, and also because I have a list of things that I would like to do that seems to remain untouched. How was our week? Well it was overall a good week. We've gone through our regular subjects: Math, English, spelling, science, geography and even Reading. Zach has been resisting reading from his reader,s (BJU, which I really love), because he does not like fiction for one, and because he finds it too long. So I have not been forcing him too hard because he reads plenty of other things and because he reads very well. But sometimes I try to still make him and have him do some form of narration about it. This week we did something different for our science as I was not able to print out the next unit of the classic science that we use. We kept on with our circle time as well, (the post on it...

Circle time

I finally come around to write this post on our new homeschool addition: Circle time Reading different blogs I came across this concept of having the kids doing some learning time together with mom. This often took the form of a circle time. So here is how it goes. Before we go into our formal school subjects, or in the case of Joho, to his activities, we gather on the sofa and do the following: Sing a song - I use you tube where they can see the words and sing along. Read either a poem, a bible story or a classic read-aloud We go over house rule, or discuss a character trait Study and practice some french Here is how I schedule these activities for the week: Circle Time   Here is the list of books I use for this time: Character Trait: Teach Them to Your Children: An Alphabet of Biblical Poems, Verses, and Stories This list Poem: A Treasury of Children's Poems Classic Read-aloud: Books by Virginia Lee Burton Just So Stories, 101 More Read-Aloud Classics: Ten-Minute Readi...

Plans for the new year

This is a late post but we are still in January so I think it is ok. I am not much of a resolution person, but I think having some goals and plans is a good thing. So here we are. What I am hoping to accomplish this year: For myself: Be more in the Word of God. Be more consistent with the kids, and by this I mean, not give up on what I am trying to do, especially character wise, but  keep my eyes on the long term objectives. Parenting is not as much about the immediate results (although we should get some of that), as much as the long term goal of raising up men who love God and want to live for His glory. Be a godly example to the kids Be more of a planner and keeping the house in order. With my Husband write out a family mission statement For the kids Immerse them in godly living, the Word of God, songs of praise, doctrine and Bible verses Continue to work on character training and household involvement Continue to nourish their academic m...

Weekly wrap-up

Here we are at the end of another week, and time to Join Kris for a weekly wrap-up at Weird Unsocialized Homeschoolers . Our week was not a bad a week but somehow I am feeling rather frustrated and a bit overwhelmed. We covered our Math, English, Geography and Science for the week. We learned about contractions, divisions and life science classification. We continued with our circle time (and I am sorry I was supposed to post on that but I just did not get to it this week, I really hope I will next week). We also had a nice field trip on Thursday which consisted of a trip back in time, to be more precise 1910, and experience what being school would be like then:   The reason why I am feeling the way I do is that, though we were able to accomplish some things, I feel like I am not accomplishing as much as |I wish I would. Although I have been working on scheduling and time organization and I do not feel like that is under control the way I would like. I probably could really us...

Sunday Hymn

The Sands of Time are Sinking Samuel Rutherford or Anne R. Cousin The sands of time are sinking, the dawn of heaven breaks; the summer morn I've sighed for, the fair, sweet morn awakes: dark, dark hath been the midnight, but dayspring is at hand, and glory, glory dwelleth in Emmanuel's land. O Christ, he is the fountain, the deep, sweet well of love! the streams of earth I've tasted more deep I'll drink above: there to an ocean fullness his mercy doth expand, and glory, glory dwelleth in Emmanuel's land. With mercy and with judgment my web of time he wove, and aye, the dews of sorrow were lustered with his love; I'll bless the hand that guided, I'll bless the heart that planned when throned where glory dwelleth in Emmanuel's land. I'll fall asleep in Jesus, filled with his likeness rise, to love and to adore him, to see him with these eyes: the King of kings in Zion my presence doth command, where glory, glory dwelleth in Emmanuel's land. I...

Weekly wrap-up

Week 2 of back to school is up, and I think we are still adjusting. Oh well, we will eventually get into the swing of things. That's the advantage of homeschooling. No need to fret because we are not exactly in par with the plans and hopes. That said we did do some Math and some English from our FLL, but that is it. One great thing of this week is that I have added circle time in our schedule, which consists of read aloud, character training, sining and French. I am hoping to write a post on that next week. Stay tuned. . . We did it twice this week and overall it went well. The workbox system that I started with Johann last week seems to be working well, and I am rather happy about that. He has been very diligent in doing what was in the box and I had minimal interruptions from his part. Now, my challenge is to fill that box with more challenging independent activities. Also, this week was my birthday. On Wednesday I turned 34. We made a little trip to Niagara falls to see the fall...

Schedule

Scheduling . Now that's a word that brings mixed feelings in me. I do not like routine. Yet, I do like being organized and having things running smoothly . I am sure many of you have heard the saying that kids thrive on and love structure . Well, I had to realized the truth of that statement. So, as much as I do not like routine I have to have structure to our day for our life to run smoothly to minimize aggravation and stress . So, What did I do to go about this whole thing of scheduling. A few months ago, with the help of my dear very organized and disciplined husband, I came up with a weekly daily schedule that looked like this . It worked well, in that the kids loved to know what was coming next. I had less whys and resistance when told that it was time to do something or when I said no to a particular activity. The only thing I did not like was 1. that any time we had to change something it became a big problem, because "it was not on the schedule". 2. I had to...
