Weekly Wrap-Up

It's time to  stop and do a wrap-up of what has been happening at our house. Since my last weekly wrap-up, Zach had his project fair presentation which went well. We've done our regular school subjects, We've done art, We've gone to the Zoo, We have read some pretty cool books,     We have had character issues to deal with. We started our spring elective session, in which I am teaching cooking. We've enjoyed a new history DVD series within our studies of the 13 colonies, called Colonial Life for Children. Also, last week-end, I caught my oldest writing of his own will, something he refuses to do and DOES NOT DO. His usual complaint about writing is, "why can't we write with scribbles?". I can see hope for the future, although I found out about dysgraphia this week and think that he might have this condition. I will have to investigate further. Lastly, but just as important...

Top Ten Reasons Why We Love Tapestry of Grace

We are nearing the end of our 2nd year using Tapestry of Grace, otherwise referred to as TOG, and I am still very much in love with this great History curriculum. So, I decided it is time I get around to write something about why we love TOG: It is Christian based . History in TOG is taught from God's perspective.TOG emphasizes throughout the curriculum the sovereignty of God and how He works out His plans and purposes through the actions of man.  TOG is Gospel centered. TOG' s goal in teaching History is to go through the events of history and discover, and point out, humanity's desperate need of a Savior.  TOG follows the classical model of education according to stages, that is, it follows the Trivium (Grammar, Dialectic and Rhetoric stages). TOG follows the classical model of a 4 year cycle through History: The Story of Redemption: Ancient World //// Between Ancient and Modern: Medieval through American Revolution //// The Nineteenth Century //// The Twen...

Christian Kids Explore Chemistry - TOS Review

Looking for  a science curriculum, make sure to read this review! A couple of months ago I was given the chance to try Christian Kids Explore Chemistry, a science curriculum put out by Bright Ideas Press . It has been a hit at our house. From the website:  "This user-friendly, unabashedly Christian science curriculum includes teaching lessons, gorgeous coloring pages, hands-on time, review sheets, and an awesome supplemental book list! You can choose from Chemistry, Creation Science, Earth and Space, and Physics. Award winning, college professors-vetted, and parent approved!" Christian Kids Explore Science is a very comprehensive and easy to use science curriculum. The curriculum is divided into 5 units, each in turn divided into 5 to 8 lessons. At the end of each lesson there are fill-in-the blank review questions, and at the end of each unit is a unit wrap-up. Target grade: 4th - 8th graders. I think it fits the target age quite well, being perfect for...

Top Ten Character Traits Needed in Homeschooling

Homeschooling is no easy task. Many parents often tell me they do not know how I can do it. To be honest I can't. I am only able to do it as I recognize that it has been appointed to me by the Lord and, that being the case, He equips me daily. My task really is to keep leaning on His Spirit to guide me and equip me with the qualities that I need to be the mom and teacher He intends for me to be. So here is a run down of some of the 10 top character traits that are needed in homeschooling: Patience Calmness - self-control Kindness and gentleness Trust in the Lord - faith Devotion and perseverance Forgiving spirit - forbearance A willingness to learn Flexibility Humility A transparent love for the Lord. You will notice that I did not put a gift of teaching. Really if you exercise the above it will compensate that fault if you think you are not a good teacher, especially #7. Also, I have to say that these are qualities in which I do not in any way excel in, but tha...

TruthQuest History Guides - TOS Review

History curricula abound. Whatever you may feel about the teaching of history, no one can deny that it has to be taught. One cannot live in the present world without knowing, or at least being aware of, what happened before our time. History is fundamental to any good education, and especially to a classical education. We need to learn from those who have gone before us. History is a great teacher if interpreted properly. So, the question is "What should I use to teach history to my kids?" There are a lot of good curricula out there, but as a member of the Old Schoolhouse Crew I was given the privilege to try out TruthQuest History Guide . What is TruthQuest History? TruthQuest History is a History curriculum  written by a veteran homeschool mom, Michelle Miller. Its main characteristic, besides being overtly Christian, is that it uses literature to teach History. The curriculum contains an overview, or summary, of  the theme or time period being studied at the begi...

Oh the Glory of Cross

The Glory of the Cross (Sovereign Grace Music Ministries) What wisdom once devised the plan Where all our sin and pride Was placed upon the perfect Lamb Who suffered, bled, and died? The wisdom of a Sovereign God Whose greatness will be shown When those who crucified Your Son Rejoice around Your throne Ref:  And, oh, the glory of the cross That You would send Your Son for us I gladly count my life as loss That I might come to know The glory of, the glory of the cross What righteousness was there revealed That sets the guilty free That justifies ungodly men And calls the filthy clean? A righteousness that proved to all Your justice has been met And holy wrath is satisfied Through one atoning death What mercy now has been proclaimed For those who would believe A love incomprehensible Our minds could not conceive? A mercy that forgives my sin Then makes me like Your Son And now I’m loved forevermore Because of what You’ve done ...
