Planning and More Planning

It's that time of the year, time to plan for the upcoming school year. I am not much of the planner, but after a couple of years of homeschooling, I have come to appreciate, love and enjoy the process. I still sometimes find it frustrating but I enjoy it nonetheless. It is so liberating to be prepared, to have a plan and not be running by the seat of your pants. It limit stress and chaos and allows you to get much more accomplished. I seem to never find planners that works well for me so I usually end up making my own planning sheets. So how do I plan?   I print out a school calendar and circle in a start date for the year, and locate the different holidays as well. We school year round with July off and a pattern of 4-5 weeks of school/1 week off. I cannot take routine for a long period of time and a break usually does the kids good. I get my calendar from Donna Young site. I make a schedule of the subjects we will be covering, and on which day of the week . We have a 4 day

ABC's of Homeschooling - O and P

It' s another week of ABC's of Homeschooling, and time to join Dawn @ 5 Kids and a Dog . I am still catching up. O for Options By now you will have realized that this is really what I love about homeschooling: the ability and freedom to choose your own method, your own curriculum, your style, your schedule etc... In our day and age the options are limitless and this has its good and bad sides. Sometimes having too many options can be a challenge and a danger, especially if you are like me and always have a hard time deciding and always second guessing yourself, however, I still love that I do not have to follow someone else's plans and ideas, especially if it does not work for my kinds. I am learning to know what it is that I want to accomplish and make decisions accordingly. I am learning to make informed decisions, to be discriminative, and to learn to live with my decisions. P is for Planning and Prayer I am pretty sure many homeschoolers would agree with me on thi

Homeschool Mother Journal

In my life this week… Recuperating from last week's  DVBSes ,  Planning, planning, planning and TOS crew mingling, oh yeah,  cleaning too. In our homeschool this week… Not much!  The boys are still reading up in Ancient Rome, they really love this era as we are completing our TOG year 1. They are enjoying playing some Math games on Dad's ipad. We did do some spelling as well (wow that is really something!) Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share… None I am always looking for some. Places we’re going and people we’re seeing… Nowhere in particular since it is so brutally hot here. We only went o the library and the mall to cool off. On Monday we were supposed to go to a homeschool picnic but I sprung my ankle last Saturday while racing a friend of mine on one of those inflatable obstacle courses, so I had to stay home with my foot up. Zach has been going to a group violin summer class and will be performing at a Starbucks next Saturday, very exciting! My favorite thing

New Friend Friday

I know today is Saturday but any day is good to make new friends. Besides I just saw this today and thought it would be nice to meet some new friends. The meet is @ Molding Minds Homeschool .

ABC's of Homeschooling - N is for ...

I am a week behind still. Last week we were VBSing at 2 churches and had lots of fun. Now we are back to the routine of life. Last's week letter was N. I had a hard time coming up with a word but I settled on Norm or Normative because when you are homeschooling you tend to deviate from the norm. Norm :      1) way of behaving that are considered normal, usual or expected 2)  Official standard or level of achievement that one is expected to reach or conform to. It goes without saying that our kids need to learn to behave in a way that is appropriate, respectful and expected given certain situations (we are not raising barbarians). So, what I would like to focus the attention to is the second definition. One characteristic of homeschooling is precisely not necessarily conforming to the accepted standard. We, as christian homeschoolers especially,  should have a higher standard. We should have more meaningful standards than acing a test (although we do want that too). E

Sunday Hymn

Every Promise Words and Music by Keith Getty & Stuart Townend From the breaking of the dawn to the setting of the sun, I will stand on ev'ry promise of Your Word. Words of power, strong to save, that will never pass away, I will stand on ev'ry promise of Your Word. For Your covenant is sure, And on this I am secure— I can stand on ev'ry promise of Your Word. When I stumble and I sin, condemnation pressing in, I will stand on ev'ry promise of Your Word. You are faithful to forgive that in freedom I might live, So I stand on ev'ry promise of Your Word. Guilt to innocence restored, You remember sins no more— So I'll stand on ev'ry promise of Your Word. When I'm faced with anguished choice, I will listen for Your voice, And I'll stand on ev'ry promise of Your Word. Through this dark and troubled land You will guide me with Your hand As I stand on ev'ry promise of Your Word. And You've promised to complete Ev'ry work begun in me— So I&

Wrap-Up Time

It 's been a while since I have done a wrap up. Fridays have come and gone by so quickly that I barely saw them. We have been on summer schedule for a couple of weeks now. What does that mean? I am not so sure. The kids are really doing whatever they want these days, although we are finishing our TOG 1 this summer. We are at week 30 and studying the Roman era. This week we have been working on a salt dough map of the Roman republic during the Punic Wars. It is not done so no pictures yet. Zach is really enjoying studying Ancient Rome and reads all of the books on the subject, and imagining himself as a roman soldier. He has a whole story about how he became a roman soldier. At the end of June the boys participated in a Christian Homeschool Track and Field (300 participants) and Joho won a gold medal. He was really happy and surprised. It was our fist time participating. Zach who is not my athletic one did not fair as well but is willing to practice for next year. In the past weeks

ABC's of Homeschooling - L and M

I got behind a week yet again. Wow it is so hard to keep up with memes. I do really love having to think about this ABC. So, here I am with 2 letters for this week. L for Love of Learning Homeschooling is about learning. But what kind learning? I homeschool because I want to give my kids a love of learning. I do not want to just shove knowledge down their throats for them to just regurgitate it the next day and forget it later and  then have them  shy away from books when they get older.  I want to teach them that learning is fun even if it often demands hard work. That is why, although I believe in some of the tenets of classical education (value of memory work, importance of Language Art and the Humanities), I make sure that the boys read things that they are interested in and have plenty of time to explore their interests of the moment. For example when the boys where into trains, I believe they read all the books in the library about train,s then it was all things emergency, then
